PLEASE STAND UP

Was angry as I left the accountants office, if he wasn’t going to pay, why did he call me to his office? I decided to go out for my lunch break, as I sauntered down the hall connecting my office and the bookshop, I saw HER office door opened, lackadaisically I just passed through without looking at HER desk, then I got hit with a wonderful scent emanating from that quarter, I did a 180 and went back to see where the scent was coming from, alas it was from HER office! Hmm,

I popped in and said “hi”

“Good afternoon “she quipped back!

Sorry, but could I get the name of whatever it is you are wearing that has that lovely smell? I asked with a grin on my face, while taking a cursory look at her, gosh,, so she is this pretty? I thought, how the heck have I missed that point all of my six months working around her?

I don’t know, it’s my elders sister’s, but if you are interested, I could get it for you”, she said with little enthusiasm. So I asked her to do that and she jokingly asked me if I wanted to get the perfume for my girlfriend. I said nope, right now I am not interested in women one bit, because I just came out of a terrible one.. We parted ways that day with her promising to get the brand name for me.

The next day I was at HER office, and she handed me a piece of paper with the name as she promised, I thanked her and left, I came back during lunch time to ask her if she could have lunch with me which she obliged, I took her to a bukka behind her office where we ate and talked about loads of stuff from religion to relationships to education and lots more. We continued the same routine for a pretty long time till the day I woke up I realized there was no way I was going to allow you slip through my life, the past months of being platonic friends really showed me a lot and opened my eyes to a new vista I hadn’t seen all my adult life, I blessed the day I decided to stop and pop through her office door.

Your father wasn’t sure, when he started seeing me frequent your house, he thought I was David,” your immediate younger brother thought I was a playa from Tudun Wada part of town. I had to prove them wrong. I remember when I called and told you I got the job at kontagora, you were like “konta-WHAT?, I saw some mixed reaction and wasn’t sure where you stood.

When it was time for me to leave, you cried your eyes out, I wasn’t sure why you were, but there and then, I made a promise to you and God that no matter what, I was gonna make it happen, you kept calling me and encouraging me when I was new in town, telling me things will be ok, you even had to split your salary into two parts so that you could sustain me, during my three months hiatus. No chick had done that for me before, walahi, I just spend, spend and spend, but yours was different, I remember I had to beg you to collect stuff from me when we first met, I just couldn’t believe a naija babe will refuse to collect money or recharge cards for that matter, you were so so different. I remember when I got settled and got accommodation and asked you to come down for a visit, you declined and I was dumbfounded, you said I had to go ask your father if I truly wanted you to come over, it was a tug of war, you Dad gave me all types of conditions if he was to allow you come over.. Living here without you was crazy, all the temptations and drama were enough for me to forget about you, but when I remember all the garrï-soaking” days and okada – sharing, I just had to put myself in check, it wasn’t easy believe me, my dear see fine fine babes all over the place from students, corpers to bankers, hmmm, no be God?. Do you remember the day I called you and asked when my people could see your parents, you were like for what? , I just laughed and told you to make sure the list ‘no plenty ohh”, you started crying, and up till now you haven’t told me why.
